Off-label procedures are when stents are used outside their specified parameters.  An analysis of various studies on stent surgeries shows that greater than 50% of stent implantations are classified as off label. This is especially prevalent in pediatric surgery's where >99% of surgeries classify as off-label. Due to the nature of off-label procedures it is sometimes left up to the surgeon to crimp the stent. Without easily accessible stent crimpers in the surgical theatre this can mean surgeons need to rely on imprecise and unreliable hand crimping. 

Research in the stent field has exploded in recent years with stent related research output in 2020 up 355% from 2000.​ This means labs all around the world in investigating novel approaches to stenting and access to a reliable, bench-top crimping mechanism would allow for quick analysis of how new stent designs would respond in practice.
